β¨πIntroducing the newest member of the @southernwild_films crew- a @reddigitalcinema V-Raptor VV!π
This incredible camera will help me bring y’all even more stunning shots of our critters! It handles colors and details in nature like no other- and gets us even slower slow motion! π’
This is such a huge step for me a wildlife filmmaker, and I’m so excited to get to work with this puppy!πβ¨
…now time to get some more hard drivesππ¦€
π»STORY TIME!π»
Me and my girl @graceeggleston were on an adventure around the Everglades filming just about every critter we laid eyes on! From ospreys to those big ol’ orange crickets that love to sit in the road. After a few hours on our journey, we decided to make a lil stop at my manatee spot where the water is a bit too murky for anything underwater! So we decided to set up shop on the water’s edge to see if we could get any topside shots of these critters. πΎ
Now in this area, the water is real murky so you can’t tell *exactly* where they’re gonna pop up after nibblin’ on some foliage! Although there’s ways to estimate where they might surface for air! π±
So when this lovely lady popped up, I swung my camera on over real quick and focused on her lightning fast. I always film in slow motion that way I get the maximum coverage of any critter- even manatees can move FAST! And this surfacing was actually very quick in real time! β‘οΈ βοΈ
Happy I got the shot of her (and got it in focus!) we went on home to review footage. I went to do playback and was like π€¨ what’s that?! There’s something else next to her!
πππITS HER BABYYYYY!πππ
WHAT a special moment!! π
Now this is such a good lesson in why it’s so important to shoot in slow motion (>50fps!) because you can catch tiny details about critters lives that you wouldn’t be able to catch with the naked eye. Tiny movements..and in this case; tiny babies!ππ₯°
Do y’all wanna know some of my tips and tricks to finding manatees here in Florida?
From the wild west, to meeting incredible friends across the pond at @wildscreenorg - and right on back to shoot on a farm, I’ve been SO grateful to have been all over the planet this past couple months! βοΈπ
Here’s a lil photo dump of my adventures!π«Άπ₯

π Did you know that this species is ANCIENT? π
β¨And it’s right here still around today in the United States (like right here in my backyard in Florida and Georgia!) with cousins all over the world!! π
Crocodilians first appeared around 84 million years ago, with 24 known species today- the American Alligator and their cousins like Caimans and Crocodiles out in Africa n’ down under! π¦
Their design is so successful that there was no reason to evolve any differently! π§
Goes to show that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! π

π π ITS FALL YALL! π π
The aspens in the Great Rocky Mountains have turned highlighter yellow!!! β¨π
π It’s so cool when they turn for fall because it makes them really easy to spot amongst the evergreens!π²
β¨ Their bright yellow color pops in the woods, which makes it so you can really easily see just how big each organism is right on the slopes!
ππ« Aspens are one of few native tree species that prefers to reproduce by suckering, that is, producing suckers or ‘ramets’ that are genetic clones of the parent!
π what’s cooler is these HUGE (word of the days π€ͺ) organisms can be thousands of years old!
πThe COOLEST fact in my opinion about aspens is that the LARGEST most DENSE organism ever found is an aspen called “Pando!” Pando is believed to be the largest, most dense organism ever found at nearly 13 million pounds. The clone spreads over 106 acres, consisting of over 40,000 individual trees. It lives in Utah!

Hey y’all- do you know what’s better than plants and animals and protected super biodiverse, accessible natural spaces! Paving them down for pickleball! Golf courses! And hey- why not throw a hotel or three in there!π€©
That is exactly what the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (ironic, right?) has proposed. They’re looking to pave down all these critters homes to add in their proposed changes to our state parks- pickleball courts, golf courses (if you know me, you know my personal beef with these and their grass), and “resort style” hotels amongst other developments.
Now if you’ve ever been to Florida, you know that we already have a TON of the above. Why do we need to pave down our supposedly protected accessible natural spaces, meant to be a safe haven for wildlife and a way for folks to get outside into nature- for more of this kind of stuff?
Now, to make it more complicated to stand up for protecting our critters, they’ve called a meeting for folks to voice their concerns- but only at 3pm, in person, for one hour on August 28th.
If you’re like most folks, you’ve got jobs that make it so you can’t attend this single meeting time.
@flwildfed has put together a way to voice your concerns! It took me only 20 seconds to fill out! See the link in my bio to learn more about these proposed changes and take action!π¬π©΅ π π
Let em’ know that we won’t ever give up on protecting our Wild Florida!! π
Do you want golf courses, hotels and pickleball courts replacing our rare biodiversity? β¬οΈ
ππNothing like filming in the glades spotting all the iconic critters- mangrove crabs, manatees, ospreys and all sorts of shorebirds!ππ
π€ π Did you know that alligators can hold their breath for 20 minutes or longer- up to 2 hours- depending on how cold the water is!
π΄ The way they sleep is different than us too! They do what’s called unihemispheric sleeping which means they shut off part of their brain to rest, keeping the other part active and alert.
ππSleeping underwater also helps them not overheat during the hottest part of the day! Which is totally what this cutie little guy was doing today. It was over 90 degrees out when I filmed this, so you can totally see why he was taking a little break!
Tbh I wish I could turn half my brain off and take a nap underwater too, that sound perfect β¨β¨β¨
π¨ β οΈ Please do not try this yourself!! While gators may be cute sweetie lil’ swamp puppies, they can be dangerous! Always keep at least 10 feet distance between you and the gator when peepin them π¨β οΈ

πΎπ One of my favorite places to be here in Florida has to be knee deep in the swamp!ππΎ
πEvery time I out to the swampland, the local residents are always out and about to film! From giant gators with tiny little dragonflies hitching a ride on their heads, to Egrets and herons that pop out from the dark green brush of the cypress trees that live in right there in the water, there’s always critters out to see!π

Filming a timelapse of ME FILMING A TIMELAPSEπ€©
π πΎFlorida is well known for the most magical sunsets, and to me, some of the best are out here in the Everglades!!
While I was out filming gators and birds, I noticed that there was a storm hangin out over in the distance- likely over Naples, right in the direction of where the sun sets, and I knew it was gonna be a good one! β¨
Wanna see what I got on my FX6? β¬οΈ
π Mangroves are hella dope to see ABOVE water but how about BELOW?πΏ
Every time I go out on my kayak here, I ALWAYS bring a camera because you never know what you’ll come across!! Today the light was playing in my favor through some mangroves right near my house here in Florida! π
Them long roots are home to SOOO many critters, from the famous mangrove snapper, to sponges and little crabs! π¦
π They also act as incredibly important nurseries for baby animals! π Why? Their roots act as a buffer for waves and wind, creating a calm, protected safe haven from not only elements, but from large predators too due to the density of the roots!
π¦ͺ they are HOTSPOTS for biodiversity because of this!! β¬οΈ β¬οΈβ¬οΈβ¬οΈ
AND to top it all off they are INCREDIBLE at helping our atmosphere and air! These carbon storage MACHINES can store up to ten times the carbon as your average forest!! π³
π¦ ACTUAL SIZE π¦
This here lizard is an Anole, and they’re super common here in Florida! And yeah- homie was getting GAINS ποΈ πͺπΌ
Okay Okay, it’s actually actual size if you’re watching on an iPhone, android or similar sized phone π
If you’re watching on a iPad or…TV? Somehow? THAT IS NOT THE SIZE OF AN ANOLE. THAT WOULD BE THE WORLDS BIGGEST ANOLE! THATS WAY TOO BIG. NA
And if you’re looking at it on your…watch or sumn- that’s too small. Why are you doing that??!
π These brown anoles range anywhere from 5-9 inches in length! And I remember seeing some as far north as Georgia.
π ποΈ Now that you’re over here with me by this tree peepin this dude- I’m sure you’re wondering, what’s that lil flappy flap under his chin?
π¦That dewlap is a flap of skin that these lizards can expand and retract with a special type of cartilage, and it’s used as a communication tool! They wave it around like a flag! And as they do push ups (yeah, they do push ups a LOT), they open it to make themselves look even bigger and more jacked π€ to other anoles!
π¦ Unforch, this species, which is specifically a Cuban brown anole, is hella invasive here in Florida, where we have the native green anole. They likely got here riding on cargo over 100 years ago!
π Y’all got lizards in your backyard? What kind do you have!? β¬οΈ
π« β°οΈ Moose!! Bighorn sheep!! Marmots!! Beavers!π¦«β¨
πΌOne thing I learned is NEVER go out without a camera! If I don’t bring out the film/video/movie camera, I bring my photo camera! I’ve learned to ALWAYS bring something I can slap my long lens onto! My 5D always comes in handy- you never know what’s gonna come out!
π
These photos were all taken on my drive over the continental divide- and all within two hours! While you may not see many critters during the day, they’re there π If you wanna spot wildlife, I always recommend going out around sunrise or sunset. That’s when everything comes out! All of these photos were taken around sunset!
π« Moose are such a treat to spot- but be careful! They’re incredibly dangerous and will charge you! Make sure you keep a good distance when watching; stay 25 yards away and you’ll be golden! β¨
π These bighorn sheep are an ICONIC Colorado species- and can be found in steep mountain terrain. These ones look kinda raggedy because they’re shedding their thick winter coats for their lean summer coats! What’s also cool about this encounter is that I found them nibbling on dirt- they were eating up minerals direct from the ground! π§ πͺ¨ π§
π¦¦(not a marmot emoji- but close enough π) Marmots are another iconic Colorado mammal- and they’re full of personality! If you’re ever walking near a rocky slope and hear a loud peep- look up on the rocks! You’ll likely find one of these critters watching you from above. They love higher elevations!
𦫠When I spotted this beaver, I wasn’t exactly sure what I was looking at as he was SO far away. I saw lily pads flipping around and something brown with “hands” grabbing around. Upon second look down my long lens, I spotted that cutie monchin on some greenery! π
πΌππ Swapped my gators for Bighorn sheep- but just for a bit! Exploring ice caves (sans ice), spotting bighorn sheep shedding, and watching the Milky Way over our heads at the overland campsite surrounded by wild columbines! ποΈ β¨
It’s July!! It’s summer!! You know what that means?!
πΌπΈπͺ»π»WILDFLOWER SZN!πΈπͺ»π»πΌ
Being a good while away from home in South Florida has given me the opportunity to check out some of the AMAZING biodiversity here in the Rockies!! β°οΈπΈ
Yall- this only BARELY scratches the surface of the amazing variety of wildflowers found here in Colorado! You can look out into a meadow here and spot all the colors of the rainbow in the fields!πΌπΈ
It’s super duper tempting to pick some and make a little bouquet- but if everyone did that, there’d be now flowers left for the critters, and it would make it impossible for the flowers to reproduce! πΌ
So please don’t pick em!πͺ»
Plus, wildflowers do terribly once cut and wilt within minutes! So pictures are TOTES the move when it comes to peepin these little mountain pretties!ππΌ πΈ
What’s yalls favorite wildflower where you come from?! β¬οΈ
β¨π»That one freelance film friend on a Tuesday coming face to face with a black bearπ»β¨
Super grateful to spend a few days in one of my FAV national parks, Great Smoky Mountain!
πΎ This National Park is home to the highest concentration of black bears in the WORLD! It’s so so great to see folks coming from far and wide to get a glimpse of this local celebrity in the wild! π»
Now they may look all cute and cuddly but PLEASE don’t approach them!β¨
The Smokies is home to so many other unique species as well, such as the little sallie pokin’ out to say hello from its lil’ crack rocks in the fourth pic π§πThere’s so many creeks and waterfalls, and endless salamander species that call ‘em home! π¦ β°οΈ
